National Hispanic American Heritage Month!
Mamie Deschillie was a Navajo folk artist. Born in either Chaco or Burnham, New Mexico, on the Navajo Nation Reservation, Deschillie lived near Farmington. Described at her death as "a traditional Navajo", she spoke limited English, and frequently wore velvet.
OH WORD?
Any day Sarah Lee sends over new works to be added to the FolkArtwork Collective shop it’s a great day. You’ve heard it here first, five new works available for purchase were just added last night and with titles like, “She fed him custard all day every day and he ate it gladly…” you know they’re going to be delightful.
See more NEW works from the self-taught Irish artist.
MUST-WATCH
A little over a year ago I stumbled upon one of the most enjoyable documentaries I have ever seen. “Possum Trot: The Life and Work of Calvin Black” takes place in 1977, a few years after Calvin Black has died but what he has left behind, one of the more incredible art environments this country has seen, his wonderful wife and partner Ruby gives a rundown of what is left and how it came to be.
This is one of a handful of documentaries directed by filmmakers Allie Light and Irving Saraf, part of their Vision Paradise series of documentary shorts on self-taught and non-conforming artists, all uploaded to YouTube thanks to the American Visionary Art Museum.
