FIND OF THE WEEK

If it seems like I have been posting a lot from the upcoming Ledbetter Folk Art Auction coming up this weekend, it’s because I absolutely have been. There are about 500 pieces available for sale, including those great Marvin Bailey jugs, some Sarah Mary Taylor quilts, and countless other beautiful and unique works. One unique piece that deserves your attention is this bottle cap sculpture created by Clarence & Grace Woolsey in Iowa roughly fifty-some years ago. Standing 3 feet high, it’s not unusual to see these available at auction, but I’m not sure I have ever seen one. Clarence & Grace Woolsey also lived in Iowa, roughly a hundred miles from where I currently sit. When they died in the 1980s, dozens of these incredible bottle cap sculptures were sent to a family member’s house who didn’t know what to do with them, and they eventually were sold off and scattered around the country. There is nothing more I would love than to bring one back to Iowa… but I feel this one may exceed my price range.

This is available for purchase at the upcoming Ledbetter Auction on Saturday, September 23rd.

B-B-BONUS
This Week in Outsider Art

This endeavor I started about five years ago came from a visit to a William Hawkins exhibit, which turned into a deep dive into the world of outsider art, folk art, and self-taught artists. And while a majority of the artwork I share here comes from a named artist, there is nothing like going to an antique store and exploring the anonymous works of Americana art.

Critical Eye is one of my favorite online outfits with the most excellent collection of unusual, one-of-a-kind, handmade, and named items for sale. Every week, they have their finds of the week, and below, you will find a few of my favorite finds from their online shop.

These are all currently for sale:

19th C. Pennsylvania Roses and Vines Watercolor on 1846 Bible Engraving Regular price, $75.00
Cut and Painted Black Tin Folk Art Rooster with Big Personality Regular price, $70.00
