WATCHING AND READING
Here are a few things I’ve been watching this past week:
Here are a few things I’ve been reading this past week:
OH WORD?
You couldn’t have asked for a better spring day in Des Moines for the first ever FolkArtwork Collective x Dust Collective Pop-Up Exhibit! Thank you to everyone who showed up. Young and old, long time lovers of folk art and newcomers, the friends and family — ya’ll are the best.
But none of it would be at all possible without the artists who trusted in me to continue to showcase their artwork and tell their stories to the world. It brings me great joy to be able to share these artworks with the people of Des Moines, and I can’t wait to see what we can get ourselves to do next.
A big congrats and thank you to my Bettendorf bud, and mentor, Sean Moeller for showing up and gracing us with some readings from his excellent debut book, “Plain Clothes Hamburglar”. After I take a much needed nap, I can’t wait to dive into it more. That Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes knows what he’s talking about, “The kind of daydream that shows up when our defenses are down, revealing a deeper truth that gives our language new meaning”.
Grab your copy today and read it up before the release of his nest book which I’m sure will be coming sooner rather than later! Get your copy here.
And if you didn’t get a chance to make it to Des Moines, you’re in luck. You can shop all the artwork online while artworks last or visit The Dust Collective (open Wednesay-Saturday 11am-6pm) for the next few weeks as the artwork will remain up gracing the wonderful walls of this fantastic vintage clothing store for the near future. Thanks again to Garrett Cornelison for having the FolkArtwork Collective and supporting self-taught and outsider art.
Ya’ll the best, appreciate each and everyone of ya — let’s keep doing weird things and supporting the arts. It’s the best of times!!!
SHOUT OUT
Shout out to you! Thanks to all of you who supported our Mexican (and Guatemalan) folk art raffle as we were able to raise over $150 to be donated to Des Moines Refugee Support, a nonprofit organization based in Des Moines, Iowa whose mission is to identify and bridge gaps for refugee families, in particular refugee children, as they establish their new lives in this country. Now more than ever, your generosity is much appreciated!
Stay tuned and check out the @folkartwork Instagram for the winners of all the raffles to be announced on Sunday, April 27th.
FROM THE COLLECTIVE

ALEXANDRE SHIFFER is a self-taught artist working in Des Moines, Iowa. Making work out of recycled materials and leftover house paint, he works as a framer at a local art gallery, often taking home leftover wood scraps and crates to paint his folk art-inspired works. In 2016, he came up with the moniker “Rat Tunnel,” which has helped guide his work since and served as a calm in the storm.
