OH WORD?
This past week, an English teacher at school approached me and asked if I happened to know of any good documentaries that could be shown in one class period. Lucky for her and me, I was born for this moment.
One of my all-time favorite documentaries is the one you see above, “Possum Trot: The Life and Work of Calvin Black,” directed by Allie Light and Irving Saraf. Not only did they direct this excellent documentary on a one-of-a-kind environment out in the desert, but part of their “Visions of Paradise” series, there are four more extremely wonderful must-watch documentaries that could be watched in one class period, or thirty minutes, however you delineate time.
All of these films are available through the American Visionary Art Museum’s YouTube channel, and you can watch them today for free. Learn more about Minnie Evans, Harry Lieberman, Tressa Prisbrey, or Chief Rolling Mountain Thunder.
If documentaries are your thing and you want even more (of course you do!), I’ve created an article you can read here featuring some of my all-time favorite documentaries on self-taught and outsider artists (this hasn’t been updated fully in a little while, so pardon if the current places to stream these are incorrect). Or feel free to check out my Letterboxd list here, which features fifty art documentaries featuring a wide array of artists from past and present and all walks of life. Enjoy!
SHOUT OUT
Shout out to b. Robert Moore and his incredible self-taught artwork for being featured in the latest Lil Yachty music video. Lil Yachty has a couple of pieces by the Des Moines artist, who will be having his first-ever museum show this summer at the Des Moines Art Center. Stay tuned for more!
