FIND OF THE WEEK
Joseph Sleep is one of my new favorite artists. First of all, great name. Second of all, super great folk art. This one came across my way thanks to the always enjoyable Black Sheep Gallery newsletter thanks to good friend, founding member of this newsletter and Nova Scotia folk art expert Audrey Sandford.
Joseph Sleep grew up in Saint John, New Brunswick. He worked in the fishing industry and as a jack-of-all trades, eventually going to work with the Bill Lynch Shows, a carnival which travelled through eastern Canada. He was hospitalized in 1973 and began drawing at that time. He later opened a small studio on Argyle Street in Halifax.
I particularly love Joseph Sleep’s work because of the simplicity of shapes and designs, the wonderful color and his use of repetition throughout his borders.
Available for purchase via Black Sheep Gallery.
✌️ every wednesday, this bonus newsletter with bonus outsider art content, including exhibit listings, personal collection highlights, and news of the week, will be sent to paid subscribers. The weekly ‘This Week in Outsider Art’ newsletter that goes out every Sunday morning continues to and will always be free of charge — enjoy ✌️

» Potter & Potter Auctions «
I love a good auction. And this Potter & Potter Auctions is no different. I’m not familiar with them, but in a few weeks they’ve got a great folk art auction taking place and say no more, I’m there hook like and sinker.
Some of these have been seen on the
rtwork Instagram over the past week or two, because I’ve been excited to share my findings. Almost too excited, I maybe shouldn’t have shared one or two of them cause I want them for myself! (How good are those devil bookends and this pig on wheels). But, if I can’t get them, maybe you can! Also, here’s a dozen or so more great items that I have my eye on — not only because they’re spectacular, but because I think you could get them at a good price. Enjoy!
