The cat is out of the bag, the good word is out and there’s no putting the ship back in the bottle — the FolkArtwork Collective is heading to New York City for the 2025 Outsider Art Fair!
Since 2022 I’ve traveled to the Outsider Art Fair, according to some — myself and Mr. Jerry Saltz — one of the greatest art fairs around. The artwork, the people, the artists, the exhibitors, everyone is so warm and friendly and I can’t wait to have a booth of my own this year at the only art fair dedicated to self-taught and outsider artists.
There will be much more to come including interviews with artists, behind the scenes looks at preparation for the fair, and first look glimpses at artwork for paid subscribers. Until then, learn more about the seven artists a part of the FolkArtwork Collective whose artwork will be on display.
Artists exhibiting include:
Esteban Whiteside is a self-taught painter whose work is based on the intersectionality of street art and politics, he began painting as an act of love.
Sarah Lee is a self-taught Irish artist who was once told by an art teacher that she wasn’t good at art, and it took years for her to finally pick back up a paintbrush.
Gabrielle K Brown is a multifaceted artist, eagerly seeking new ways to tell stories through paintings and sculptures while retaining an object like quality utilizing many folk art materials.
Jordan Sullivan is a self-taught artist born in Houston, Texas, in addition to making art, he has worked as a drug and alcohol counselor at rehabs for adolescents and adults.
Jackie Bradshaw is a neurodivergent folk artist from Ontario, Canada who started painting while working at her in-home daycare. She continued creating art as a means to quiet her mind and body.
Reneesha McCoy is a self-taught artist whose work is a celebration of the consequence of life and nature, primarily in relation to the female body, her work is uniquely abstract.
The Estate of James Ash, who always wanted to be an art teacher. For various reasons, including addiction, his mental health, and living without internet in the Michigan woods, he never became an art teacher. So, he taught himself how to make art.
SHOUT OUT
Shout out to Max Colby’s beautiful artwork, part of the Des Moines Art Center permanent collection currently on display at one of my favorite museums in the world!
