OH WORD?
The FolkArtwork Collective is pleased to announce a one-day-only celebration of outsider art, a first-time author, and vintage clothing.
Join us at The Dust Collective on Saturday, April 26th, from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm. There will be a handful of items that didn't find homes at the 2025 Outsider Art Fair that could make its way home with you! Not only will some of my favorite outsider artists from around the globe have artwork available for purchase, but I'm thrilled to have Sean Moeller, founder of Daytrotter and owner of Racoon Motel in Davenport, Iowa, join us for a special reading of his debut book "PLAIN CLOTHES HAMBURGLAR".
"In PLAIN CLOTHES HAMBURGLAR, Sean Moeller captures the moment of when an epiphany exists just on the other side of consciousness. The kind of daydream that shows up when our defenses are down, revealing a deeper truth that gives our language new meaning." — Taylor Goldsmith, lead singer of Dawes
It's Drake Relays weekend, so why not get two Bettendorf track greats (okay maybe just one) who used to run circles around Drake Stadium, but now spend their time helping emerging artists -- musicians and visual artists alike -- share their creative and magical joy with the world.
Not only will you have the chance to hear from Moeller and shop great artwork, but you will be sure to enjoy the incredible curated collection of vintage clothing from one of the best vintage clothing stores in the Midwest — The Dust Collective, owned and operated by Garrett Cornelison, just celebrated its one-year anniversary in the East Village. And if you don't believe me how great it is, peep this beauty of a sweatshirt I purchased there a few weeks ago! (I don't even go to Grand View!!!)
And if that's not enough for you, there will be a raffle for some of FolkArtwork's Oaxcan wood-carved folk art animals, with proceeds going to a local charity helping immigrants fight the oppression coming from this current administration. There will also be treats, coffee, and sparkling water, and in my opinion -- you can't have an art exhibit without a coloring table for the kids.
Please join us at The Dust Collective (509 E 5th St, Des Moines, IA 50309) on Saturday, April 26th from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm.
SHOUT OUT
This is a long-overdue appreciation post and shout out to this Roosevelt High School student for creating this beautiful and powerful piece of art, which was featured at the DMPS District Art Show!
It’s magical for a variety of reasons, but it’s particularly spectacular to me because art teacher extraordinaire Nicole James taught her students this project after so kindly visiting the opening of the first-ever FolkArtwork exhibit back in November 2024. Inspired by Lorena Eliasen’s practice of papier-mâché painted boxes that play with depth and feel very “folk artsy”, Nicole took this idea back to her 3D art class, and this is one of the pieces that came about!
FROM THE COLLECTIVE

DINAH HANSON-CARRILLO is a Los Angeles born and raised musician turned artist. She mostly paints from memory or imagination but will often use the faces of musicians and actors to complete a piece. Her other influences are tarot cards, alternate universes, the surreality of Whittier, the idea of many lives living under the same sky, and dreams.
