FEATURED ARTIST
OH WORD?
It brings me great joy to welcome my former drawing professor and friend, Ben Gardner, to the FolkArtwork Collective. Currently hanging in my living room is a piece of work by Ben that we exchanged when I graduated over ten years ago, and it’s cool to see how his work has evolved since then.
Ben is an artist, writer, and musician. He started drawing on bowling score pads that his parents brought home from their league, obsessing over Commander Mark’s drawing show “The Secret City” when he was young. His recent work combines medieval illuminated manuscripts and his interest in folklore, superstition, myth, and storytelling.
Resembling illuminated manuscripts of the past and the visionary folk artworks of today, Ben’s vibrant works feel as if they could be found unfolded in a 15th-century manuscript as much while also feeling contemporary and in a league of their own. Coming from a long line of educators and farmers, he is a former drawing professor at Drake University; he currently coordinates university student experiences at the Eskenazi Museum of Art in Bloomington.
You can see more works by Ben Garnder on FolkArtwork.art or on his Instagram page and website. More artists and artworks will be added in the coming weeks, so stay tuned and keep supporting living artists!
