“Born in 1863 in Crewe, Hope started his working life as a carpenter, but in 1905 became interested in spirit photography after capturing the supposed image of a ghost while photographing a friend. He went on to found and lead a group of six spirit photographers known as the Crewe Circle. By 1922 Hope had moved to London where he established himself as a professional medium. The work of the Crew Circle was investigated on various occasions, the most famous of these taking place in 1922, when the Society for Psychical Research sent Harry Price to investigate. Price collected evidence that Hope was substituting glass plates bearing ghostly images in order to produce his spirit photographs. Later the same year Price published his findings, exposing Hope as a fraudster. Hope continued to practice, despite his exposure, until his death in 1933.”

WATCHING AND READING
Here are a few things I’ve been watching this past week:
Here are a few things I’ve been reading this past week:
OH WORD?

About two years ago, my now 7-year-old son sat next to me while I was working on various FolkArtwork tasks on my to-do list. He then started drawing while looking at the fantastic Sarah Lee artwork titled “Los Gatitos”. He worked so hard, and it turned out fantastic! Sarah was proud, the internet was proud, I was proud, and most importantly, he was proud.
Smash cut to him putting a $50 price tag on it at the “Faces In The Crowd” FolkArtwork show, and it being the most sought-after work there — sorry all other artists… nepotism at its finest. A handful of people wanted to buy it, and he proudly sold it to one lucky couple who couldn’t be more thrilled. He now walks around the house, reminding everyone he is a “famous artist.”
Due to the popularity, we decided to make postcards and list them online for sale. You can purchase one, or
forty-fivetwenty-five of them today!
After a discussion with my new famous artist with a big head, we decided that the proceeds from each sale will be sent to Ahmed, a creative 7-year-old Palestinian boy living inside a displacement camp in Gaza with his mother, his father and two young siblings.
As of today, you can purchase (with free shipping to the continental United States) a postcard for $5 (while supplies last,) and we will do our best to get them out to you by the end of the year. Thanks for the love and support.
You can donate directly to Ahmed’s family here or purchase one of the shirts he created, all proceeds going directly to his family.
SHOUT OUT
Shout out to the hilarious Conan O’Brien, known for his love of history who while conducting a staff review compares his producer to famed self-taught folk artist Anna Mary Robertson, also known as Grandma Moses.
FROM THE COLLECTIVE
Same ol' funding of war crimes by the US of A = new works by Esteban Whiteside -- the “Apartide” series available for purchase in the FolkArtwork Collective shop.
Esteban Whiteside is a self-taught painter whose work is based on the intersectionality of street art and politics. A native of Asheville, North Carolina, he began painting as an act of love. This then led to him dedicating more time and research into painting, with an interest in abstraction.
