FEATURED ARTIST OF THE WEEK

today seems like a great day to mention I’m thrilled to have Day Brièrre’s artwork in the FolkArtwork Collective booth at the 2026 Outsider Art Fair — among other artists. I’ve been such a fan for such a long time, can’t wait to see this and more in person!

Martín Ramírez was born on January 30th, in 1895 in Jalisco, Mexico.
"Widely considered one of the 20th century’s self-taught masters of drawing, Ramírez immigrated to the United States in 1925, at age 30, leaving behind his wife Ana and their four children.
Barely able to speak English, he worked on the railroads and in the mines in California for several years, but he became a drifter during the Great Depression and was eventually arrested, for reasons still unclear, in 1931. While in police custody, he was diagnosed as manic-depressive and remanded to a mental facility.
Ramírez, who was later also diagnosed with catatonic schizophrenia, was subsequently moved through a series of psychiatric institutions until 1948, when he was sent to DeWitt, where he remained until his death in 1963." (Guggenheim)

A FEW THINGS…
“Skip therapy and watch [Ingmar] Bergman… Maybe. Actually, don’t.” Charli xcx’s Closet Picks
I’m trying to read more. I don’t know where to start, even though I have a lot of books I haven’t gotten to yet — but really want to check out this newly translated 1930 memoir by the legendary Claude Cahun Cancelled Confessions (or Disavowals)
The extremely fascinating and heartbreaking tale of Lucius Noeman, before and after his lobotomy, Museum of Images of The Unconscious
Rest in peace to the incredibly brilliant Catherina O’Hara Remembering Catherine O’Hara, Who Played an Artist and A.i.A. Cover Girl in Beetlejuice
OH WORD?
It’s a busy next few weeks on tap for the FolkArtwork Collective. Here are a few places you can catch artwork and shows happening in Des Moines and New York City!
February 6th
Mainframe Studios First Friday
I’m moving in with Ashley Mary, and every few months you’ll be able to see a new “exhibit” of artwork from the FolkArtwork Collective, my personal collection, and more.
This month — see artwork by the late James Ash, who always wanted to be an artist but, for various reasons, including addiction, mental health struggles, and more, never had the opportunity. After his passing, his daughter Anna cleaned out his off-grid cabin in the Michigan woods and found two dozen large, surreal, and brightly colored paintings by the self-taught artist.
Come see these works in person, only at Mainframe Studios (5pm-8pm) in Des Moines, Iowa!
Plus, the latest episode of FolkArtwork and Friends comes out Friday morning!
February 7th - March 7th
Noel Hatfield: Unsung Heroes
One of my favorite coffee shops around (Wake Up Iowa) is hosting one of my favorite artists and people’s (Noel Hatfield) latest exhibits of portraits, “Unsung Heroes”.
A self-taught artist’s look at America’s most valuable activists and risk takers whose significant impact on society has often gone unnoticed.
Noel Hatfield, a 73-year-old self-taught artist from Winterest, Iowa, has been painting for only a few years, and is making some of his best work yet. Come to the “Sideroom Gallery” at Wake Up Iowa to see eleven works of heroes who don’t often get their due, and enjoy some of the most delicious coffee around!
Opening reception taking place at 10am-2pm on Saturday, February 7th.
March 19th - March 22nd
Outsider Art Fair
I’m incredibly excited and honored to be heading back to New York City to exhibit some of my favorite outsider art at the Outsider Art Fair.
I’ve mentioned a few artists whose work will be featured in the booth, including Pam Puck, Day Brièrre, Kay Le Seelleur Ara, Jackie Bradshaw, Reneesha Mccoy, and more!
Stay tuned for more previews, updates, and behind-the-scenes looks at preparations for the 2026 Outsider Art Fair.
SHOUT OUT
Shout out to the one and only Sarah Theresea Lee for continuing to make some of my favorite artwork around!!!
FROM THE COLLECTIVE

LINDA DILEVA’s art shines light on a girlish whimsy, with a twinge of melancholy. She takes imagery from the pages of her childhood (flowers, stars, mermaids, unicorns), and memories from the places that imprinted on her soul. Her art explores dualities like togetherness/ isolation, a longing for nature, and the newfound perspective of motherhood while still striving for self, love, and friendship.
