FIND ❤️🔥F THE WEEK
Elijah Pierce is an absolute legend. I’ve been fortunate enough to see his work a handful of times in person in New York, mainly at the Outsider Art Fair booth of Lindsay Gallery. And online, countless times while perusing the permanent collection of the Columbus Museum of Art.
It’s such a delight. His work stands alone and is so refined and well-crafted. A barber by trade, having crafted animals and religious scenes out of wood for decades — first starting with a pocket knife as a kid — Elijah Pierce first started making these for his wife for her birthday, and ever since, the rest of his history.
This Lion is tremendous, and could be yours for a tremendous, perhaps too steep a price, in my humble opinion. But it could still be yours! Bigger than most animals this size, carved out of wood and signed on the bottom. This Lion was created around 1975 and was exhibited in the Black Folk Art in America 1930-1980 exhibit at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.
So that’s neat!
