today seems like a great day to mention that I'm absolutely through the moon to have @kay_leseelleur's work in the FolkArtwork Collective booth at the 2026 @outsiderartfair -- among other artists. Ever since I first laid eyes on her work, I was mesmerized, and I can't wait to see it all in person in New York!

A FEW THINGS…

OH WORD?

A few years ago I was lucky enough to go see the Christie’s “Outsider Art” auction in person. It was quite thrilling, and at times nerve racking as the lady in front of me was bidding tens of thousands of dollars for a Minnie Evans and I didn’t want to flinch or move a muscle so that the auctioneer didn’t think I was bidding. I don’t have that kind of money!

But it was one of the best exhibits of art, as the days before you can go to the showroom, see all the pieces and the day of being in the auction room was good fun, even though all the works were a little out of my price range…

Despite that, Christie’s auction (and all auctions really) are a very fun little glimpse into some of the best works that rarely see the light of day as they’ve been sitting in someone’s collection for years if not decades.

Christie’s Outsider Art auction features masterpieces by the category’s top artists, as well as significant works by up‑and‑coming names in the field. The sale includes drawings and sculptures from iconic figures such as Bill Traylor, Nellie Mae Rowe, Thornton Dial and Elijah Pierce. Also featured are remarkable works by European and Asian artists such as Adolf Wolfli, Anna Zemánková and Hiroyuki Doi. Pieces by top American artists in the category including William Edmondson, James Castle, Clementine Hunter, Winfred Rembert, Mario Sanchez, Eugene Von Bruenchenhein, Sister Gertrude Morgan, Minnie Evans and Joseph Yoakum round out this diverse and exciting sale. There’s a lot of great works to see, including some really neat Amos Ferguson works, the one and only William Hawkins, a few spectactular Clementine Hunter works and much much more.

NOEL HATFIELD is a seventy-three-year-old self-taught artist from Winterset, Iowa. Working in oil paint on stretched canvas or dibond aluminum, Noel paints in several styles, including Abstract, Expressionist, and Impasto, with a knife and brush. When he is not painting, he’s usually taking care of his adorable grandchildren.
