Artwork by the Dutch artist **Nelius Faling** (1928-1963), who suffered from the rare metabolic disease: erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP). Exposed to sunlight his skin would start to burn and swell, causing him a lot of pain and forcing him to live an isolated life.

During a walk one summer day in 1952, the Schiedam artist Faling suddenly and painfully became aware of a very rare disease … from then on, Faling retreated to his studio and tried to process his disturbing experiences in drawings. (Sammlung Prinzhorn)

KAY LE SEELLEUR ARA (b. 1941) fled the Nazis during World War II, attended university in Bath, taught art classes while raising two young children, and, now living on the island of Jersey at the age of eighty-four, creates artwork every chance she gets. After a life-altering fall in 2017 left her unable to walk unaided, Kay’s creative fire was fully unleashed. The accident that caused Kay’s disability also became the defining turning point in her artistic journey.

Marjane Satrapi, ‘Persepolis’ Director, Dies at 56

Marjane Satrapi, the French-Iranian graphic novelist, artist and film director whose landmark animated feature Persepolis earned a Cannes Jury Prize and an Oscar nomination and made her one of the most distinctive voices in world cinema, has died. She was 56. (Art News)
