FIND OF THE WEEK
"Real popular culture is folk art..." -- Noam Chomsky
I was scrolling through some of my favorites on eBay the other day, and I always keep coming back to this beautifully carved folk art piece. I love everything about it. Its stance, the natural patina, the texture and detail throughout, and how thin yet still freestanding it is. Growing up, I felt like, as an art student, you’re drawn to drawing and painting, the traditional go-to art form, especially for your local high school art classroom and budget. But lately, I’ve become obsessed with and continued to be blown away by these carved wooden pieces. This beauty would look great on a mantle piece (looks over at my crowded mantle that my wife wants simplified) and could be yours.
This beauty could be yours as it is currently on sale on eBay.
B-B-BONUS
Last week, I shared a few art pieces from the Slotin Self-Art Masterpiece auction. Just a few of the many pieces that stood out to me: pieces I would love to own, unique, or that I thought were masterpieces in their own right — plus ones I’d like to own. Well, that auction came and went, and I went without buying a single piece. Mainly because I’m running out of places to put some of these works but also, I can’t afford what these are going for! Scrolling through the results, I was slightly blown away by a few of the prices these masterpieces went for. Below, you’ll find the top thirteen most expensive works of art sold at last week’s auction. Congrats if you were the one to purchase them. Also, can I have one?
Works are in order of most expensive with the price of each following the name of the artist and the title of the work.
"Adolf Wölfli was a Swiss artist who was one of the first artists to be associated with the Art Brut or outsider art label. Wölfli produced a huge number of works during his life, often working with the barest of materials and trading smaller works with visitors to the clinic to obtain pencils, paper or other essentials." - Wikipedia
"Anna Zemánková was a Czech painter. She was one of the world's most important artists of art brut. However, her high artistic culture, the diversity of her work, and her clear inner vision make her a departure from the original definition of art brut, and she figures in this category as a solitaire." - Wikipedia
