FIND OF THE WEEK
Wowzers. You see some pieces of art that are great and others that knock your socks off, and this snuffbox from 1854 is one of those pieces where my socks are in the other room. As stated on the Steven S. Powers website, currently offering this piece for $3,800 is “a tour-de-force of design and execution.” The six men and dog composition leaves you with more questions than answers, but it was meaningful to the maker or had some dreamlike sentiment. Carved from a coquilla nut, the fruit of a Brazilian palm tree whose hard dense shell is used by turners to make ornamental articles, it is one of the cooler carved pieces from nearly two hundred years ago you’ll lay your eyes on.
This piece is currently available for purchase from Steven S. Powers Works of Art & Americana
