FIND OF THE WEEK

Sarah Mary Taylor, African American. Mississippi. A highly recognized quilt maker going all the way back to 1970 when she began her notoriety. From the collection of Larry Hackley. 81" x 84"

I don’t know about you, but I get a warm fuzzy feeling every time I see one of Sarah Mary Taylor’s quilts. Maybe this is your first time laying eyes on a quilt by this brilliant African-American artist from Mississippi. Born in 1916, she learned to quilt from her aunt and mother, working most of her life on a plantation, earning a living through manual labor, Taylor has produced some of the most bold, colorful, and beautiful quilts of the past forty-plus years.

This is one of a few quilts available for purchase at the upcoming Ledbetter Auction on Saturday, September 23rd.

B-B-BONUS
This Week in Outsider Art

There’s no secret that William Hawkins is one of my all-time favorite artists. Hell, an art history student I had last year came up to me today and asked if I was still a fan of William Hawkins. I’m not shy about it. I also feel like I’ve seen all of his works but am pleasantly delighted when I stumble upon new works by William Hawkins.

A few nights ago, I found these brilliant drawings by William Hawkins. Unlike his brightly colored and vivid paintings from the 1980s, these drawings provide a further glimpse into the process and artwork of this ‘mad genius’ known for only using one brush. While the works I stumbled upon a few nights ago are too small to share here, let’s look at eleven William Hawkins from the 2022 online exclusive exhibition, “William Hawkins: Drawings” by Ricco/Maresca Gallery in New York.

Self-Portrait, Graphite on paper 14 x 11 in. (35.6 x 27.9 cm)
