FIND OF THE WEEK
Is there anything better than discovering a new artist and that artist drops your jaw to the floor? This gorgeous ‘Goat’ work by Mamie Deschillie is incredible, but everything I see of hers remains my new favorite. I recently discovered her work while visiting Santa Fe at The Rainbow Man gallery. A Navajo folk artist born in 1920, Deschillie is known for works on cardboard. Still, you can occasionally find wonderful works like these, often featuring animals native to the American Southwest and others she has seen in circuses and children's books.
This work was available for purchase at the Slotin Folk Art auction last weekend and sold for $350.
B-B-BONUS
one of my all-time favorite artists working now is Puerto Rican born artist Raquel Albarran. her works are preoccupied with toes, noses, and encapsulated forms, full of juxtapositions and playful explorations of life, illness, and objects begging to be squeezed. need we say more?
