FIND OF THE WEEK
Last week I shared one of my favorite works I saw at the recent Slotin Folk Art auction, Ronald Cooper’s ‘Devil Fishing.’ Not only was I a big fan, but most of Instagram seemed to enjoy it as well, and it started quite a conversation. Apparently, this work was inspired by Leroy Almon and Elijah Pierce, who before Cooper, created their very own ‘Devil Fishing’ works. Per Leroy Almon’s niece, Elijah Pierce created this work first, and Almon created a few variations based upon “his own interpretation of the work from his teacher, Elijah.” The coolest.
This work is in a private collection, it sold at auction in 2021 for an undisclosed sum.
B-B-BONUS
Thanks to my good friend Morteza Zahedi, artist and owner of an outsider art gallery in Tehran, Iran, I have become very familiar and fond of many self-taught artists out of Iran. None bring me more excitement and continue to blow me away more than the textile works of CC, seen below.
These works were part of a recent solo exhibition titled “Empty Chairs”, a collaboration between Fiuz Gallery and Outsider Inn Gallery in Kashan, Iran.
