It's not every day do you get to see a real-life, authentic, one-of-a-kind Norval Morrisseau. While I expected to see a lot of great art in Santa Fe, I don’t think I ever thought I would see this Norval sitting behind a desk next to some of the most beautiful indigenous pottery.

It’s always fun to surprise gallerists. “Is that a Norval?”

“Yes, yes it is. How’d you know?

“Is it a real one?”

“Yes, yes it is. HOW DO YOU KNOW?!”

I know! Of course, I know. I’ve been a big fan of Norval’s work and have done some minimal research into this art and the people that copied his art and tried to pass along the fakes at real works — including one to the lead singer of The Barenaked Ladies, which led to the worthwhile documentary, “There Are No Fakes.”

Finally, seeing what I believe is my first Norval Morrisseau work up close in personal was a real treat. The brushstrokes, the texture, and the use of color were very enjoyable in person, especially with the cool A/C blowing in my face as I take a break from the Santa Fe heat.
