My summer is coming to an end. I know all of ours will eventually, but soon I will be back at school, getting ready for the hundreds and thousands of adoring students who will return and be ready to learn.

Like most summers, I watch as many movies as I can. Not to brag, but my count is 30 in the past 60 days — I’ll take it! To make selecting a movie to watch a little easier, I try to come up with a theme. This summer? International movies and the circus. Please, please, I know, I’m cool.

Two of my favorite films I watched this summer were La Strada (1954; d. Federico Fellini) and Santa Sangre (1989; d. Alejandro Jodorowsky). One, you watch so you can sound sophisticated when you go back to school to tell your high school students what you did over the summer. The other, you watch as your wife walks downstairs while a young man is feeding his mother, pretending to be her arms, and your wife says, “What is wrong with you?”

She knows what’s wrong with me. I’ve made her watch Freaks (1932; d. Tod Browning).

Oh, summer, we hardly knew thee. Off to join the circus of school. Thanks for being here, and watch some circus movies!
