Janko Domsic’s drawings depict human figures rendered with geometric shapes, so much so that they are made with the aid of a ruler and compass and are combined with symbols and phrases in French, Croatian, or German. Without taking any account of syntax, this jumble of words throws together scraps of personal life, excerpts from Nazi songs, and scatological preoccupations, but refers particularly to religious and mystical ideas. The words ‘Jesus’, ‘God’, or ‘Bog’, in Croatian, appear several times in his drawings. The moral code of freemasonry is another common theme through symbols such as three dots, various abbreviations, pentagrams, or swastikas. Domsic’s figures sometimes feature man as part of the microcosm, Christ, or an angel with outspread wings, but they always convey a sense of mystery. Whatever the nature of the figure, Domsic is sure to identify with it.

OH WORD?
Run, don’t walk to SAGE Studio’s latest gallery exhibition, “Go To Your Room: A Pipe Cleaner Experience by Montrel Beverly”. An Austin, Texas based artist born in 2003, Beverly’s entire art practice focuses on pipe cleaners in which he was first introduced to them in elementary school, as he told me in some variation, “they were using them in math class and I wanted to make a Sonic,” — so pipe cleaners it was!
Though pipe cleaners are often dismissed as a craft material, Beverly elevates them to fine art, building elaborate creations that include automobiles, food, Ferris wheels, and buildings. His work has been featured in Hyperallergic magazine and represented at New York City's Outsider Art Fair. — SAGE Studio & Gallery
Montrel Beverly is one of the kindest and most talented artists around, I hope you have the opportunity to catch his 90’s inspired artwork or maybe one day that toddler sized old-fashioned robot he told me he was going to make. I offered my toddler for reference but clearly he has it under control.
“Go To Your Room” is open now at SAGE Studio & Gallery located in Austin, Texas.
