What is a heddle pulley?
>> Integral to the process of weaving textiles, heddle pulleys are functional objects used to ease the movement of the heddle, the part of the loom that separates alternate warp threads and allows the shuttle carrying the weft threads to pass through via Virginia Museum of Fine Arts
FEATURED ARTIST OF THE WEEK
“Yep, women linked at the centre helping the world go round and various circles of men arranged according to their usefulness. For example, in this part of the world, plumbers would be nearer at hand than politicians.”
WATCHING AND READING
Here are a few things I’ve been watching this past week:
Here are a few things I’ve been reading this past week:
OH WORD?
What do a minotaur, Ancient Rome, Ancient Egypt, and the greatest lion fire place ever have in common? They are all created by mastermind outsider artist Ron Gittins (1939 – 2019) in Birkenhead near Liverpool, England.
Around this time last year, “Ron’s Place” as it has been come to known was on the verge of destruction. After the passing of Ron, who created this wonderful art environment in his rented flat over the course of decades, the place sat empty and as the property owner was about to sell the builidng, Ron’s Place was about to be lost to the world.
In the year since, the building as been saved and Ron’s Place in the past week this has become the first outsider art work to gain listed status in England.
In England, "listing" marks and celebrates a building's special architectural and historic interest, and also brings it under the consideration of the planning system, so that it can be protected for future generations.
"The extraordinary creation of the largely self-taught artist Ron Gittins, the rented flat on Merseyside he transformed over decades into a fantasy of Ancient Rome and Egypt, is being honoured by Historic England with Grade II listed status—the first example of Outsider Art in England to win such recognition." — The Art Newspaper
How great it is, that future generations will be able to enjoy Ron’s Place, a truly magical and inspiring piece of outsider art for years and years to come.
SHOUT OUT
As you are probably aware, gang violence is running rampant in Haiti right now and times are extremely brutal for people throughout the entire country. According to the United Nations, nearly 5 million people in Haiti are suffering from acute food insecurity.
These Haitian art pieces are available for sale through Charles “Art” Jerry. If you are willing and able, a purchase of artwork would help these young artists, and people, tremendously. I have one of my own sitting in my high school art room which my students thoroughly enjoy.
